Help! I’m having erotic dreams about colleagues

Q: I FREQUENTLY have explicit sexual dreams about colleagues, even though I’m in a satisfying relationship with my long-term boyfriend. Why?

A: You’re unlikely to have crushes on all of your male colleagues, so the dreams certainly shouldn’t be interpreted literally. Experts say the contents of our dreams is symbolic, and rarely means what it seems to on the surface. They can often be about power struggles or abstract fantasies.

Male and female bodies can experience sexual arousal many times a day, when awake and asleep, and this is healthy for our libido and sexual function. This means the body may feel aroused several times a night, and you may not be aware of it.

The subconscious, and the body’s sexual response, process stimuli from the day. We spend a huge portion of our lives at work, so the brain has a lot of input from there, and our erotic mind may simply be using that without it signifying a real desire. Some people may dream of doing sexual acts they know would never turn them on in reality.

Our brain is our strongest, most creative and versatile sexual organ, and it has many ways of channelling our urges. We don’t consciously control our dreams, so they’re an outlet.

You’re in a good relationship, so your dreams don’t represent anything “real”. If they upset you, try reading a dream book that explains how to train your mind to control your dreams.

At work, try spending time with other colleagues, to direct the mind’s focus elsewhere and give it less input from the office.

If you’d rather train your brain to have erotic dreams about your boyfriend – or someone exciting but unattainable such as a celebrity – give your brain access to images and thoughts about them in the afternoon and before falling asleep.

You have every right to enjoy your erotic self, free from guilt. It’s a powerful tool to make you feel wonderful, and won’t it feel great waking up to a delicious memory instead of feeling a bit awkward as you walk into work?

Unfortunately, I hardly ever dream about sex.
