Bring up the topic of sex to a group of people, and often times embarrassment creeps in. Add specifics like the idea of (yes, I’m going to say it) orgasm, and well, many people want to run for the hills.

But when I speak to groups about sex, there’s one piece of advice I always give. It raises eyebrows and gets startled looks, but hear me out:
“Give yourself an orgasm once a week. Put it on your to-do list!”

Here’s why: “Whether alone or with a partner, an orgasm is good medicine!” says Ellen Barnard, MSSW, Sexual Health Educator and Counselor at A Woman’s Touch Sexuality Resource Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Barnard cites these research-supported health benefits of an orgasm per week:

Reduces the risk of mild depression.

Offers a 36% reduction in the risk of heart disease.

Boosts the immune system.

Fights the effects of chronic pain.

Strengthens the pelvic floor to keep everything in place and not leaking.

    Clearly (apart from the obvious) there must be something very different between male and female psyche with regards to orgasms. I am pretty convinced that males would not need to put the act of giving oneself an orgasm on a ‘to do’ list.

    Thanks though; next time my wife catches me having a wank, I will tell her it is for medicinal purposes.
